PokerStars is the biggest online poker room in existence today. It is not only the home of several renowned online poker professionals, it’s also served as a launch-pad for a few. Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer both earned their WSOP main event seats here. One of the key elements of PokerStars’ success is probably the fact that they accept U.S. players to this very day. It was after the UIGEA has been passed that they overtook Party Poker in popularity, even though they had been one of the leading online poker rooms before that too.
The variety of games offered on PokerStars is outstanding. What’s more is that these games are not just sitting there with their tables empty. Because of the huge traffic that PokerStars draws, there is decent action on every poker variant, even on the more exotic ones. Texas Holdem is the flagship and the most popular variant, of course, and PokerStars is indeed the place to go if you’re looking for top-notch tournament action. At tournament tables, the blinds go up in levels every 10 minutes. There is no 10-hand limit rule at PokerStars.
PokerStars is not exactly a promotions bonanza. Apparently these guys are so stacked with players, that viral marketing alone probably brings about more new players that any promotion campaign at a lesser poker room, regardless of how generous it is. PokerStars does offer WSOP satellites and sub-satellites though (after all, that’s what they’re famous for), and their weekly $1 million guaranteed is the most generous prize-pool tournament in online poker.
There are plenty of tourneys with buy-ins in the $500 range or above, but these games tend to feature very skilled competition and are not exactly easy to cash in.
PokerStars Sign up Bonus
PokerStars’ sign up bonus is not the most generous in the industry either, but still it offers pretty good value. Players get a 100% match on their first deposits up to $600, which they can unlock by generating FPPs.
Besides the sign up bonus, new players also gain access to freerolls which offer tens of thousands of dollars in guaranteed prizes. While the sign up bonus can only be qualified as average, PokerStars’ loyalty program is the best in online poker. The FPPs that players earn can be turned into merchandize, tournament buy-ins, gift cards and cash.
What are the big plusses about this online poker room? Well, besides a few slips here and there, everything: its game selection, its traffic, its sign-up bonus and its loyalty program. I can’t really think about any cons right now, but if I absolutely must come up with something, I’d point a finger at their software which looks dated. Regardless of that though, it is still the best software for multi-tabling in the industry.
I’d give this room a mark of 9.9 out of 10, but then again, if PokerStars is not a mark 10 room, I don’t know which is. So, 10 it is.
